Fifty brown trout, each transformed into an original artwork, will be auctioned in Gore on Friday night to raise money for the Eastern Southland Gallery.
The 50 Fish exhibition has been on show at the gallery through October. Artists and local personalities were each given a simple brown trout silhouette and invited to turn it into a one-of-a-kind piece, in what the gallery describes as a celebration of creativity, community and the connection to the river.
The works come off the wall on Friday 30 October and go under the hammer at the Māruawai Centre in Norfolk Street from 7pm. Tickets are $40 a person, including food and refreshments, and fish-themed raffles will run on the night.
Proceeds will help pay for permanent art installations bringing the stories of the Old Hokonui Museum to life.
Bookings can be made through the gallery by phone or email, and all 50 artworks can be viewed on the gallery's website ahead of the sale.
More on the walls
The auction comes in a busy stretch for the Gore District Council gallery, which occupies the town's 1909 former public library.
Painter Eliza Glyn's exhibition Perpetual Motion, which runs until 15 November, marks a shift from the west harbour landscapes she is known for towards Catlins riverscapes and recent still lifes exploring perception and subjectivity. Glyn will give a free floor talk about her life as an artist and the works in the show at 3pm on Sunday 1 November.
Also showing until 15 November is Faces & Flowers, pairing paintings by Dunedin artist Patricia France with poems by Paekākāriki poet Dinah Hawken. The exhibition was curated by Vicki Robson and Greg O'Brien and developed with Toi MAHARA, the Kāpiti Coast district gallery.
Later in November the Muka Youth Prints tour returns to the south, offering original stone lithographs for sale at $90 each to buyers aged five to 18, with no adults allowed in the room. The artists' names are hidden so young collectors choose on the work alone, and there is no pressure to buy.
The tour visits He Waka Tuia in Invercargill on Friday 27 November from midday to 5pm and the East Gore Art Centre on Saturday 28 November from 11am to 5pm.
The Eastern Southland Gallery is open weekdays from 10am to 4.30pm, Saturdays from 10.30am to 4pm and Sundays and public holidays from 1pm to 4pm. Entry is free.
